Contextual review(draft)

by: Ling Lai

Through nearly two months' study at the fashion & textile foundation at central saint martins, I quite get used to the whole studying schedule as well as the whole surroundings. As well, I have a lot to say about myself and my work.

First of all, I really enjoyed the learning experience in CSM which provides me such a brand-new learning style. When I didn’t get in touch with the course, I thought that every day I’ll focus on making clothes, while the reality is totally different. Apart from discussing fashion , social problems, politics and even something personal were brought to the class. This really opens a new world to me and pushes me to get out of comfort zone and get in touch with the new things.

I used to be keen on making womenswear, while started making a project officially in CSM, I find that there is no such an obvious dividing line between menswear and womenswear in the contemporary fashion industry. Especially, after the gender project which we discussed gender identity a lot. Why clothes can define gender? Also, this is a starting point of my latest project —what's the point’ project that basically I want to create a genderless garment which is based on the embryo in the womb because when research for the things which are genderless, the first thing pops into my mind is the embryo. I’d better say that this project is the best project that I have done among all of the projects that  I did in the past two months. First of all, this project is more self-directed compared to others, which means what I  want to do and what I want to put in the project is handled by myself. Besides, this project is more like an expanding work from my previous work, in other words, I have such full research of the concept that I want to develop about.

Research is so important that if I had no research on this project I’ll definitely get the misconception of the embryo which has no syndrome of gender because only the embryo before six weeks has no gender syndrome, otherwise, I’ll get it wrong of the shape ,the color, everything of the embryo. Talking about the color , one thing is so tricky about it in this project. Maybe it’s just because I’m not thoughtful enough. When I’m talking about the stereotype of the society about clothes, I didn’t consider the color, however pink is always related to women while blue is for men. So off white is what I want to use for the final garment to represent the sense of genderless. But in the earliest stage of this project, I used a bunch of intense colors like red, orange, etc. because of the original research of the embryo. So, the color of the different stage can’t make any sense, because they are so different, while this can be considered as a black sheep among the whole project.

Throughout the research of this week, I find that there is such a strong similarity between me and Rei Kawakubo, first of all, is the concept that Rei will not get a reference from what people did before or something cultural. What is more provoking is that Rei is always playing with clothes, creating abnormal pattern prices. Remembering that the show of 1997 [Body meets Dress], the creative thoughts of how the body interacts with clothes —corroding, blending, mixing, exploding. And how Rei using the strange shape to expanding the possibilities of fashion —making the clothes off the body, however it makes the body and the clothes into a more sophisticated and contradictory game. Thanks to Rei, I realize that a piece of cloths can be so diverse which is not just about fabric cutting in pieces in order to make a suit on the body while making clothes is more like a way to express my self, my emotions that sort of thing.

But, originally, I should admit that clothes are based on pattern cutting, fabric that sort of thing. While in the deconstructed object project, I did learn a lot about the structure of garment and how a simple coat is made trough pieces like a puzzle. What is more surprising is that when I deconstruct the coat I found the similarities between the pieces of trousers and the front of the coat , so I planned to use the pieces of the coat and recreate a pair of trousers, this kind of process reminds me Martin Margiela’s show of 2001 which reconstructed a lot of pieces which is not connected with clothes into a garment.

At the final stage, I’d like to get to the fashion apartment which I think is more suitable for me, while textiles are also an important part of fashion design. Creating structure and playing with shapes are more interesting to me.

gender project

Gender norms are partially socially constructed. That’s why gender norms change from one culture to the next. But there’s a huge variation in these environments. You no more get to choose your gender than you do your race, height, or species. Because gender has some basis in biology, though, in no way implies a strict gender binary, nor negates the existence of transgender and non-binary identities.  To say it’s biological doesn’t mean it’s perfectly binary.

It has nothing to do with how one is socially regarded, how people relate to the world, appearance or manner, but something internal. This internal feeling, of feeling either male or female, is held to be the only relevant dimension of what truly determines an individual's gender.

Digital textiles x Textile futures

Responding to the ideas generated in the brainstorming activity you are required to write a 200-word critical review about 1 concept of your choosing. You will research and find examples of artists, designers, scientists or any factual research that justifies your design/concept. The fabrics within the selected category need to be the focus of your review.

Trough today's lecture and workshop we are able to get in touch with a bunch of materials which can be divided into 3 sections :
Bio innovation, Digital design future, recycled matter

while thinking about how to combine the materials into another product, we focused on the recycled one which are rainboots made out of bubblegum, a fabric made from 100% recycled polyester, plastic from the lining of a paper cup, and plastic wire made of plastic water bottles.

Basically, I was inspired by the technique of making the fabric by 100% polyester, so we combine the plastic from the lining of the paper cup and the plastic wire and weave them together into a waterproof fabric which can be used to make some umbrellas that sort of thing.

WechatIMG1068.jpeg

WechatIMG1062.jpegWechatIMG1066.jpeg

What is surprising among all the materials of our group, is the leather-like mushroom-based material. It feels just like the as leather from an animal, even nobody found that it is a mushroom at first. In such a brutal fashion industry, organ fur is more and more popular while a lot of industry will use sufficient materials like polyester that sort of thing, using mushrooms to "grow" leather is such a genius idea.

Deconstructionism / Anti-fashion

Writing a critical review

Brief:

The aim of this form is to deconstruct the process of writing a critical review. Building a critical language and ability to critically feedback and analyze your own and others work is essential to your progression as a designer.

Critical reviewing requires an awareness of the subject matter, it should be looked at from a variety of perspectives, analyzing the concepts of the subject, separating them into their main components, and then understanding how these interrelate, connect and influence each other.

Using the critical review format below consider the – How, when, where and who? If you have the answers to these simple questions you can then build your critical review around them.

HOW? – deconstruct and reconstruct second-hand clothes

WHEN? – 1994-1996

WHERE? – Europe

WHO? - Martin Margiela

THE FORMAT OF A CRITICAL REVIEW

INTRODUCTION

State the designer/subject matter you are reviewing, the title of the design and give a brief explanation of the design. Write a summary of your main findings or key argument and end the introduction with a brief statement of the evaluation of your findings.

During the golden time of fashion 1980s, the highlight of super femineity and the use of pop color created such a brilliant fashion industry, while in the 1990s, the fashion world is the different place to be.

Apart from the two great Japanese designers who are also the pioneer of deconstruction and anti-fashion--Yohji Yamamoto & Rei Kawakubo, there was also a promising young person - Martin Margiela.

While some of the people didn't like his work and said that: we have already seen this type of things from  Comme des Garçons, Margiela is just a dumb copycat. Some of the people admired Margiela a lot, one of them is Raf Simons who was inspired by Margiela and turned to do fashion design instead of industrial design.

To be more specific, Margiela was more like the air during the fashion industry in the 1990s and he is considered as the master of deconstruction.

 MAIN BODY (CRITIQUE)

Discusses and evaluates the strengths, weaknesses and important features of the designer/subject. The discussion should be based on specific criteria of the design and include other sources to support it (with references). i.e. Research other designers that have created similar work that can justify or disprove your argument.

The previous old work done by Margiela in the 1990s was unprecedented, the bunch of second-hand clothes that had been used in Margiela's work, sometimes people even doubt that this can be called fashion? But just like Yohji Yamamoto said in an interview: fashion is fashion, just like air .so we breathe the air. naturally, the air will be fast or polluted, the fashion goes changing every 3or4 years .but in that meaning I’m not a fashion designer .i don’t chase the trend. Margiela's cutting-edge behavior in the 1990s had the same meaning as Yohji thought. why this type of fashion can't be considered as fashion?

-It was a total shock, I response to our overflowing ultra consumers, fashion had never dared to do anything like that, so I think it was normal that we felt scandalized by Martin's message or his aesthetics. because we couldn't relate him to anything else .well we could actually draw a parallel with art. what was amazing was that his designs were associated with the product of a very high technical caliber, I think people in the fashion business picked up on that very quickly. we were not dealing with a. joke but a real pioneer, it's true that I came out there saying only a frigid cow could wear that stuff that'll teach me to hold my tongue because my wardrobe is full of Margiela now.- said by one of the audiences from the first Margiela's show in 1989.

Although the clothes were even unfinished(He exposed the stitches of a garment, rubbed off its edges, or reversed the inside and outside of a garment which can make the garment so abnormal.)the previous work by Martin Margiela were made of vintage clothes  ,they are still fabulous in a way which is challenging the normal aesthetic .

Maison Martin Margiela 1989

CONCLUSION

Concludes the critical review with a restatement of your overall opinion on the subject matter. It can also include recommendations and some further explanation of your judgment to show that it is fair and reasonable.

Margiela's work was quite controversial during the old-time, while he is one hundred percent a master now, not only the style he offered to us but also the theory of Anti-fashion which is definitely crucial in the present fashion industry. In such a fast-paced fashion industry what we should do to change the rule?

key words: grown garments

group mind map:

 WechatIMG87561.jpeg

IMG_2471.jpg

my original idea:

1.the growing clothes

the clothes designed for the young people who grow very fast, the clothes can grow with the body in order to avoid wasting resources and the pollution that brought  by the clothing industry .(natural fibre, a living clothes ???like a wearable plant/what's more the clothes can be 100% recyclable because it's all made of natural resources instead of the artificial ones which is quite toxic)

2.grow a cloth

in the future ,it might be a compulsory  policy for people to buy clothes --you have to grow your own clothes . In other words , if you want a new cloth, using a genetically-modified seed to grow one might be the only way.

group's advanced idea(mind map):

IMG_2472.jpg

key words:grow clothes , paying time ,protect environment, genetically-modified

how :

Every time you want to get a new clothes , you have to go to a "seeds"shop to get a clothes' seed and you hog to your home and put it in a portable greenhouse which will force the clothes to grow faster . In addition , the job of the future designer will not only collaborate with the technicians who have a good command of garment-making technique but also the experts  / scientists of gene.

where:

It might be an international policy in the future for people to grow clothes ,so everywhere that people live.

who:

anybody ,not only the poor people but also the rich people have to grow their own clothes. only the clothes grown by yourself can be worn by yourself .

when :

when this technic is advanced enough for people to do it alone at home and when it's really necessary to do things like that .

1.

Cons:

If you want to grow your seed into a gorgeous clothes/garments you have to not only pay much care about it but also get it some fertilizer. But I think it’s also kind of pollution to the environment , what’s more you have to use water to grow the plant for clothes , it can be a waste of resources.

Pros:

Comparing to the modern fashion industry the toxic dyestuff and the artificial additive can be more harmful to the environment , in addition if we can grow a clothes by planting a seed ,our technology is definitely advanced enough to create the harmless fertilizer for growing this type of seeds.

2.

Cons:

It’s so inconvenient, if it is just an instant need of clothes ,i should wait for it to grow ???

Pros :

This is what I want to talk about , using seeds to grow clothes can not only reduce the waste by it self , but also slow down the pace of fashion . Nowadays fashion industry is running so fast so that some of the fast fashion company like : H&M ,ZARA create so many wastes to the world stealthily , in other words the trends is so diverse that we want to buy clothes every second time.waiting the clothes to grow can force you to buy less can take more care about the clothes which planted by yourself.

3.

Cons:

If there is person who can grow very well and he bought a bunch of seeds ,which means he tried to sell the gorgeous clothes planted by himself to the rich people at a pretty high price . This kind of behavior might at the opposite of your concept that everybody should grow the clothes in order that they can take much more care to the clothes .

Pros :

It’s so easy to deal with .The amount of seed that a person can buy in a month or a season is confirmed by considering their  jobs , age etc.this is what government should do.

Reflection 2019/09/19

jacket project

1.what did you learn from this week project?

This week we are mainly talking about deconstruction , just like the meaning of deconstruction (The act of breaking something down into its separate parts in order to understand its meaning ,especially when this is different from how it was previously understood .)I know clearly how a garment(mine is a coat ) is constructed by a lot of pattern pieces and make it into a 3D form . what is more surprising is that how successful it is for me to reconstruct the pieces from a coat into a top and a trousers .

2.what did you learn by looking at your peers' work ?

When looking at peers' work I do realize something that I should learn about , like my friend-- Yuxi Tao , she did a great job in showing her thinking process and how her idea develop by using photos and drawings , while I think my own work is not that logical . Apart from it , the layout is so important in a sketch book , while some of the layout of my work is bit crowded which can make the whole page in a mess . A good layout helps you use your work to communicate with the audiences well.

3.How do you want to incorporate in your own work in the next project?

1.Do more drawings and combine them with the pictures that I take which can make whole page more vivid

2.pay more attention on the layout of the sketchbook (in a way which can show the idea well but also can make the audience comfortable )

comments from today:

negative one :

-over labeled-

I do think that I write a lot in my sketchbook in order to show what I'm doing right now , maybe it's not necessary to do things like that just like the tutors said your work have to talk by itself , I probably will not add more text stuff in the future .

IMG_4305.jpg.1

-the picture detract the drawing's impact-

Bad layout will destroy everything in a sketchbook, even when the elements is individually great .

pay moremoremoremoremoremoremore attention on the layout .

jacket project

1. what did you prefer draping on body or creating samples ?why?

I'd better say that I prefer draping on body than creating samples , creating random structure on the human body and get the body and the fabric into connection is so interesting. maybe it is also one of my problems that every time when I'm designing something , I'll pay more attention on the silhouette but not the texture of the garment .

In addition I found that I'm not good at doing things which is pretty delicate just like creating samples ....I have to pay more attention to it.

2.reflect on one process of deconstruction , what did you learn and / or enjoy ?

The garment that I deconstruct is a woolen coat with a lot of fine darts ,I found that a whole piece of coat need to be constructed by so many parts , not only the things you can see from the outside of the coat but also the lining and the inside pocket of the coat .

what is more surprising is that ,when the coat is completely destructed , all the parts of the coat can be lied flatly on the floor while the garment is in a 3D form which can even fit the human body very well.

3. How has your research on deconstruction fed into the development of your design ?(be specific )

To be honest when I start to draping all the patterns from constructed from my coat ,I have no idea what to do , because they are all the patterns from a coat which means they are all functional or can be fitted to the specific human body , this kind of thought blocks my mind.

But when I get some research of Margiela I found that he used even gloves to make a garment so even objects for different uses can be reconstructed to fit human body ,so I try to use the coat pattern to build a trousers .

surprisingly ,or it is lucky to find that the patterns of an original trousers are so similar to the front pattern of a coat .

WechatIMG1022.jpeg.1

similarities between the pattern cutting of trousers and front coat

In addition , because of the show Margiela held in 1997 ,(he use the surface of the manikin to made clothes is such brilliant idea)so I'm thinking about using the lining of the coat to make a new garment .

1.What do we gain from observational drawing , using multiple techniques?

Just like the word--observational means , this kind of way of drawing requires you to gaze on the object or you have to observe the object carefully in order to draw the shape , details , texture etc. of the object.

By using multiple techniques can not only make our drawings more vivid but also make it feels 3D. Adding the color by using different techniques or even different drawing materials can make your drawings (which supposed to be in a 2D form) tangible .

examples: (comparing to the first drawing , I like the second the third one more , because they are drew by multiple techniques)

WechatIMG995.jpeg.2

WechatIMG993.jpeg

WechatIMG994.jpeg

2.What characteristics of your garment reveal its identity and function ?

My garment is a navy  woolen coat with a bunch of fine darts in order to fit the body well. The pockets inside the coat on the lining part and the deep pockets on the coat reveal that this coat not for leisure time but maybe for commuting ,like some office men or old men who wold like to bring things like handkerchief ,box of  cigarettes or business card .

3.Which elements of your garment have you found the most interesting and why ?

I found the lining of my garment kind of interesting , as the inner part of a coat ,it has the same shape of the coat and when I deconstruct it I found the lining itself can even be a separate individual garment .

What 's more ,the lining has a strong comparison with the wool which is outer fabric that is used for the coat , this comparison within one garment make the whole look interesting .

Podcast Reflection 2019/09/12

1.Did you relate to what the students said ?

Oh yes , definitely .when talking about the first week of foundation , it's quite vivid to say it’s like being a fish out of water, i mean ,Although we are the selected students from all around the world or even say that we are the elites to take part in CSM, the first week project it's kind of confusing or I'm not prepared to do a project in the first week .But ,frankly I kind of get used to it in the end of the week. Just like student1 said : you kind of get a rhythm after a bit.

2.Were the first week as you imagine ?

I would like to say half and a half ,by this I mean I know that as a top arts school in the whole world ,the pressure comes from studying in CSM  can't be ignored ,also I know that the harder you work the better you'll be . So I'm not afraid of it , pressure keeps me moving forward.

3.Was there anything specific the former student said that was helpful?

When talking about the work which is not perfect , I agree with that don't focus on the work which is  not "good" in your mind ,just let it go .It's just a process how you develop your own thoughts and it's ok to have something which is not great enough.

1.In what way did the idea of psychogeography  inform your decision making in today's drawing task?

 ? no idea .

2.when considering your thought process, you think it is ok to be lost?

I think it's ok for everybody to be lost , but every time when you are lost in your thought process ,the things you haver to do right now is to find another way to develop your thoughts , because it's not possible for a person always  to be right , right ?

Reflection 2019/09/10

Reflection 2019/09/10

1.what was successful for you and why?

From today's work , I found that I'm successful in transform a 3D object into a 2D version ,by this I mean drawing from a tangible object and make it into a print on a paper or even as print for a clothes is not a big deal for me.

WechatIMG972.jpeg

In addition ,I used to dislike marker a lot while I like to use crayons which can make me draw freely(mental effects only),but today I drew a lot with markers and found that is not a big deal I can handle it, maybe it's a little success for me LOL.

WechatIMG973.jpeg

WechatIMG974.jpeg

2.what was unsuccessful today for you ,and how to improve?

negative space drawing I found that kind fo difficult for me , because when I using the drawing technique--negative space ....my final outcome is so weird ,I mean it's not as beautiful as my other work, probably I'll practice more .

WechatIMG975.jpeg

3.how did you find working in a group situation ?

Group working is great , I mean working in a group can make individual ideas into a big ideas which is an interesting thing.

Also we can learn form each other while working together .

4.if you took time to look at peers work ,what inspired you and why?

I'm that type of person who will pay more attention to the silhouette of a object but not the details ,but when I look at others' work  of my group members I found that detailed things is great which is as good as the spontaneous silhouette , so the last 3 drawings left for us to draw I tried to draw more details of the objects and it's great .

Reflection 2019/09/09

1.what do you like about your work so far?

I think I quite like to draw in a way which is playing with the pens and drawing for fun,I mean I don’t like the serious drawing like literary sketch—drawing geometric figure that sort of thing .everytime when I’m drawing something I find the image is vivid or in a way which can express my own feelings.

In addition ,color management can also be a strength of me , the color I use in one image won’t be pretty absonant.

2.what could be improved?

I find that my drawings are quite flat sometimes ,which means I’m not a person who are keen on using diverse materials for drawing but this is something I should learn about . A variety of materials in one image can not only make your work more vivid but also make it tangible in order that your work can even be in a 3D form .

Besides, sometimes there won’t be a key point in my drawings or there are too many key point s in one image which can make the drawings kind of messy.

project of the week (pitching)

key words: Anarchism/ Cut / Air

1.How did you react having to pitch your idea to a group ?

I find that quite practical for me to pitch my idea to a group , because if you want to talk about the ides which is originally comes from yourself to another person ,you have to be quite logical ,in other words you have to explain your idea  in a way which is lucid or easy for others to understand .This is also a process which can strengthen your own thoughts.

What’s more , I find that I can find out some deficiencies about my idea trough pitching while I’m talking about something which has weak logical connection that sort of thing .

 WechatIMG955.jpeg

WechatIMG956.jpeg

2.How could you improve your pitch technique?

-Summarize my idea and make my presentation be concise and to the point .

-Try to lead the audience go trough my thoughts, but not only talk about it in my own words .

3. In what way does your final idea meet the brief?

In one hands I did some experiments which is connected to my project and which is helpful for me to develop the original idea but in  another hand when I’m listen to others presentation I find my self kind of trapped by the three key words : Anarchism / Air /Cut .or in other words I didn’t think broadly enough and my project I kind of boring actually comparing to others’ .But at least my project didn’t stray from the point.

Reflection 2019/09/02

Reflection 2019/09/02

1.What did you learn from today?

Generally, thinking broadly is quite crucial for a designer or an artist. In addition , not only the individual work be an important part in our learning process, but also the group work . In other words working in teams by changing ideas from different people with different cultural background which can offer us with the interesting things that had never happened in our own culture is also crucial in our studying. For instance , when we talked about the word- suspend ,we found the similarity but also the difference in how people try to drive the bad things like demons ,monsters etc. (Chinese would like to suspend a small jade-made or wood-made Buddhism statue in the front of the entrance-hall ,but in western culture people would prefer to suspend a small bible or something . )

 2. How did you react to sharing your thought process to the group?

Individual’s power can never exceed a team’s work, this is what I want to talk about . It’s good for us to share our own thought process to a group of people ,our ideas can be judged or even have a discussion about them .(just like exchanging ideas ,because it is the individuals who will always have different thoughts)

But what I should do is never try imitate one’s thought or in other words don’t try to be someone else (sometimes the ideas from different people CAN be pretty similar). But generally speaking, the advantages of  sharing our thought process to the group outweighs the disadvantages.

3.Create & Action plan

My words : futurism/air/cut

Research Yoko ono lennon —cut

How air get engaged with human body ( air is part of body . Surrounding get changed by human body , meantime our body get changed by the surroundings )

Cut in pieces? Balloon? Isolation the air? Cutcutcut??????

Reflection 2019/09/03

Reflection 2019/09/03

Project of the week

Key words :Anarchism / Cut / Air

1.Where will you go to find the research for contextual practice?

It is said that the internet is so tricky, I mean there might have a bunch of fake information or the information which is not that exact . But I should admit that internet is the most convenient way to gather information .

(im wondering what exact  the contextual practice is ???so confusing )

2.What in particular are you looking  for ? And how do you hope it can impact  your project?

Im now looking for the the property distribution with Anarchism , air can be considered as a belongings for a person when the environment is polluted and there is no more infinite air for human to breath .in this project there are two key  points:1.How to distribute ? 2. The devices

3.How do you think you can develop your project ? Scale /material/location/context

To be more specific I would like to design a wearable devices for the future people to breath (under the condition of Anarchism, there is only equal distribution of air to everybody ). It is under the condition of FUTURE and it is something that have to be worn by human body ,i should  think about the materials ?(sustainable?materials with high-technology?) Besides, what is more important is that the form or the shape of the device ,is it just a mask ? Or it has to be a astronaut-like garment ?

In addition , not only the device  is important but also how the air is distributed to anybody under two circumstances:1. Anarchism 2. Bad environment .

4.What have you learnt from collaborating with your peers?

People come up with different ideas , while some people might get the ideas that I didn’t think about .  It’s quite useful to collaborate with peers ,

In other hands , we might have some disagreements and sometimes is kind of embarrassing to reach an agreement. But also it is the change can be a challenge for everybody to jump out of the comfortable zone ,which means the disagreement can force us to think much more broadly and find out the things that we didn’t think about .

Project of the week

Key words :Anarchism / Cut / Air

????????????How to get every word connected in one project perfectly????????????

reflection 2019/10/27

Today is the last day before the assessment, I start to organize my portfolio and look back through what I have done in the past two months. The obvious progression of my work represents I did learn a lot through the intense study in CSM.

Not only the different techniques to draw or make the texture samples but also a variety of methods to create interesting silhouettes.

But, on the other hand, I have to do more research whenever I want to start a project, besides the design development should be more logical and interesting if I want to get in BA fashion, SO FIERCE!!!!!!!!!!

what's the point project

Today I'm starting making the garment, while the garment is actually not like normal clothes, the pattern pieces should be carefully considered.

final .jpg

Apart from the pattern pieces, I found a big problem that the color of the garment which is considered to be off white (because under the situation of genderless, color can even define genders according to the stereotype of society (pink-woman, blue-man)  ) But when I look back through the previous sketches. I used a bunch of intensive colors like red and orange (because of the pictures that I researched for embryo are full of this kind of color. ) next time this is what I should think about at the earliest stage.

what's the point project

Trough the tutorial of this Thursday. I did find a lot have to improve this new project

what is the most important is the progress of this project is kind of messy , this is simply because I have two starting point of the project , one is the outer garment which should be considered as the amniotic sac for the embryo(textile) and also the inner garment which is body pieces(structure).

It is just because I didn't do enough research in the beginning. what I have to do now is reorganize the whole project in the right direction.

'what's the point' project

Something boring just happened when I developed my idea tonight, when considering the ' embryo' concept, I was like there are so many things I can do, I can create fabulous samples according to the environment of the embryo.

BUT, it is so boring, which means this kind of development process is ' cliche'.

'what's the point' project

keywords: deconstruct/gender

While I found that the deconstructed object(jacket)project is the one that I most enjoyed among all the projects done before, I plan to get it further.

Basically, In the jacket project, I deconstructed a male woolen coat into a womenswear-a top and a pair of trousers. So I'm thinking about deconstructing womenswear into the male pieces. Then I found that there is also a connection between this project and the gender project (the garment for our main character in the video of this project is basically deconstructed from menswear and made them into a dress )

WechatIMG1101.jpeg.2

garment for the main character in the video

But I feel that this idea is quite boring and means nothing, then I try to think about why the garment can define gender? And I remembered that something from previous research that embryo has no syndrome which can show gender in the earliest 5-6 weeks

Then I start to do some work with the embryo and its relationship between adults' bodies and came up with some idea:

1.the things around the embryo(placenta, umbilical cord, amniotic sac, chorionic sac)can be considered as the garment for the embryo.

2.skin can be considered as a garment for the human body.

3.the gesture/ position of the embryo in the amniotic sac is interesting.

The only reason that I start to reflect on the project at the end of the week is that we have so many things to do during the preparation part in the beginning.

Although this is not the first time for me to do a video(our plan is to do a video), we still meet many difficulties, the most crucial one is the topic , it is just simply because the keyword of this project of this week is so broad that we can’t find a specific way to develop it .

Then we tried to think about the gender identity, and the LGBTQIA+ group and the stereotype of people.

The initial idea is basically about somebody who struggles himself about his gender identity and his body. While the body is just a body gender is just a gender.

WechatIMG1090.jpeg.1

Then we start to think about what force the struggle, we come with the stereotype of the society, people’s bad and brutal comment to the LGBTQIA+ community.

The film is supposed to be successful because we’ve done a lot during the preparation part .......but .........

1.the background we built is so messy which we didn’t use a whiteboard for the back.

2.we don’t talk about the performance in a detailed way .the performance is not pretty ideal.

3.the script got changed during the performance by members of our group while it is not logical and the new script is totally different from the one we’ve done before.

4. I was supposed to be the recorder of the film,I don’t know the reasons why when I’m recording some characters in the film are recording too.so the scene from my records can even see somebody is recording by their phone LMAO

In addition, some of us plan to do a storybook using the photos we got that day and get some screenshots from the film.

progress tutorials

Tutorial feedback on Studio Practice:

Ling would like to follow the Fashion pathway
The best project so far is Paul Kindersley. Ling has produced some fantastic experimental work in this area. He is pushing himself on the textiles side but is struggling and doesn’t like what he has produced so far.

It is true that I don't like the texture samples that I produced from the Bianca project or to say that I'm never that kind of person who is keen on textile things while creating silhouettes is more interesting for me .

(I REALLY SHOULD GET OUT OF THE COMFORTABLE ZONE!!!)

Tutorial Feedback on Contextual Practice and Workflow:

Wednesdays Contextual Practice lessons in the titles for all contextual reflection, to include the date. Workflow is well written and up to date.

what is important is that I really should get the layout of the whole workflow more clear.

Priorities for improvement before assessment:

Continue to develop the textiles side of your work in order to feel more confident in this area. Make an appointment to see Jennifer re workflow upload problems.
Include your film-making process in your workflow writing

Bianca Saunders (Practitioner) project

1. Did you think you were successful with the way you displayed your work? if so why / why not?

I don't think that I did a pretty great job, on one hand, my presentation didn't show my idea development logically, in other words, although the presentation is not bad the process pf my project wasn't shown. On the other hand, I should admit that there was a strong connection between the images I collected, the collages, the paper-based sample, and my final outcome.

WechatIMG1061.jpeg.1

2. What part of the project did you engage with the most?

I'd better say that I engaged with using the samples to experiment on the human body and playing with the scale. It's so much fun to create wonderful silhouettes using the samples that I created before.

1.jpg

2.jpg

3.jpg

4.jpg

3. How did the peers' crits affect your work?

I did receive a bunch of comments from my peers during the week of my work, somebody said that my 3D work is good and they love the colors I chose to use. But there is a big problem that I found by myself is that my original ideas are kind of blocked when I start to do some development of my work, I'd better jump out of my comfort zone in the next project and try to use more techniques while thinking about my project in diverse angels.

4. Name three things that were successful and three that you would do differently.

The sample experiment on the human body is quite successful so as to the presentation of the sample (white paper background) while the development of the whole project is so weak which means I will do more research and drawings before I start to do some samples which can make this project more comfortable or easy for people to understand . In addition, the colors that I used in this project are kind of weird, I should choose the colors more carefully.

(gender)Paul Kindersley project

The only reason that I start to reflect on the project in the end is that we have so many things to prepare in the beginning. To be honest this is not the first time for me to do a video(our team's initial plan is to make a video which shows how the pressure from the society destroy a happy child trough the stereotype of gender)

But, we do have many difficulties in making this project. The most crucial thing is the topic (the only reason that we find difficult in doing this is that the keyword--gender is so broad that we can't find a specific topic )

In the beginning, we are all interested in gender identities and the inner fight in one person with the body, gender that sort of thing.

WechatIMG1090.jpeg

inner fight experiment

Then we try to think about why there is an inner fight in one's mind (pressure from everywhere, society)

and we want to make a film focus on one boy who likes being a woman and wearing girlish stuff, playing pink dolls, etc.

WechatIMG1091.jpeg

background setting

  looks by us(garment, makeup)

the video is supposed to succeed because we do a lot to make it great. But......

1.the setting is kind of messy (choose a white background instead )

2.the script got changed by members from our team instantly (we didn't follow our initial script and the story is not designed by thinking about the logic  )

3.the film is a shit that I was supposed to be filmer, but when I start to record, somebody else was also recording which means the scene of my film can even see somebody from our story is recording a film LMAO

the film is not part of my work now. and part of our team members would like to do a storybook using the images we got yesterday and some screenshot from the shitty film...............

Reflection 2019/09/25

Bianca Saunders (Practitioner) project

1.Create your own action plan

1.create my texture samples more organic which means can show my idea very well.(try more techniques)

2.experiment the Samples on the human body can create some interesting silhouette .

3. experiment the color (my color palette of this project has such a strong contrast ,try to make all the colors harmoniously )

2.Reflect on your process development ,Did You have any difficulties ?What were these -eg.(time management ,insufficient research)? How can this be improved ?

I found that I have so many ideas of how to present my thoughts trough textile sample making ,sometimes my samples is a mess because of the insufficient research or the ideas are exploting which make me kind of anxious ,next time I should do them step by step and develop the idea more logically .

In addition I should admit that my time management is also not that good , that is to say I'm low-efficient . I'd better work harder the day after.

3.How has seeing peers work affected the way you can improve yours?

while seeing peer's work I found some techniques which I didn't think about and which is so good ,and I also found someone use the same techniques as me but use the different ways to present their work which I should learn about.

What's more I found that I tried to hard to do the texture things but the mark making is so weak in my work , do more.

reflection 2019/10/03

reflection 2019/10/03

the only reason why are doing my reflection at the end of the project is that there was so much work for our team to do during the beginning of the project. Basically, this project is kind of difficult for us to do

Reflection 2019/09/23

Reflection 2019/09/23

Bianca Saunders (Practitioner) project

1.Do you think that today's research method was successful?

Doing mind map first and then search for the pictures which can visualize your thought is quite useful or easy to visualize our original idea and even can develop our idea trough collaging .

But there is a short hand of this method . while what you think about is quite emotional which can not be shown by pictures but can be drawn directly. So while I'm trying  to collect the pictures which can show my idea I should also think about how my ideas can be shown by other ways .

2.Did you collages meet the criteria ,how?(scale? experiment contrast elements? mark making? mixed media?)

I think my colleges meet the criteria which used a bunch of multi-media and mark making ,but what I should pay more attention to my collages is the layout , it's kind of messy today .
